Iran successfully fires missiles

Iran has test fired its second long-range missile during a naval exercise in the Gulf, tonight state TV's website quoted a senior navy commander as saying.

LATEST: Iran has test fired its second long-range missile during a naval exercise in the Gulf, tonight state TV's website quoted a senior navy commander as saying. "Today our Nour (Light) surface-to-surface long range missile was also successfully launched,'' said deputy navy Commander Mahmoud Mousavi. Earlier tonight Mousavi said: "We have test fired a long-range shore-to-sea missile called Qader (capable), which managed to successfully destroy predetermined targets in the Gulf." The move follows Iran's threat to halt oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. "Today we will test-fire Qader and Nour long range missiles during the drill," Mousavi told state TV earlier today. Iran has been holding the 10-day naval exercise at a time of increased tension with Western powers over its nuclear programme, and Mousavi said on Sunday it had successfully test-fired a medium range surface-to-air missile. Tehran threatened last week to stop the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz if it became the target of an oil embargo over its nuclear ambitions. The European Union has said it is considering a ban - already in place in the United States - on imports of Iranian crude. The US Fifth Fleet said it will not allow any disruption of traffic in the vital oil shipping route. The United States and Israel say they have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to resolve a dispute over the nuclear programme, which Tehran says is peaceful but the West believes is a cover for trying to build atomic bombs.
Auckland QC to act for jailed Fijian grandmother

Prominent Auckland QC Peter Williams is heading to Fiji to act for a 74-year-old grandmother who is in regime custody, charged with trying to overthrow dictator Voreqe Bainimarama.

Prominent Auckland QC Peter Williams is heading to Fiji to act for a 74-year-old grandmother who is in regime custody, charged with trying to overthrow dictator Voreqe Bainimarama. Her detention since Friday co-incided with Bainimarama yesterday announcing he would end martial law imposed more than two years ago, when the country's Court of Appeal ruled his 2006 coup was illegal. On Friday, police seized businesswoman and former MP Dr Mere Samisoni and three others. They have been interrogated in custody, without lawyers, since then. This afternoon the regime said Samisoni, Mataiasi Ragigia, Apete Vereti and Semisi Lasike would be charged "with the offence urging political violence", contrary to a military decree passed in 2009. "The four, between the months of September and December 2011, in Suva in the Central Division intentionally conspired to overthrow by force of violence the Government of Fiji," the Ministry of Information said this afternoon. "They are to appear at the Suva Magistrate Court tomorrow morning." Williams, who has a 50-year record of involvement in New Zealand criminal courts and acted for some of the biggest names in court history, left for Fiji this afternoon to act for Samisoni. Her British based family fear the grandmother of 11 would be one of the last to be prosecuted under martial law. Samisoni, who founded the popular 30-store Hot Bread Kitchen chain before turning to politics has been held in Suva's infamous Central Police Station over the long New Year's weekend. Daughter Vanessa Charters said they had been told Samisoni had allegedly made a confession. "At this moment in time we aren't sure what this alleged confession relates to but we do know for a fact, we have had it independently verified, that mum's lawyer was not present at the time of this so-called confession," she said. Yesterday, in an address to the nation, Bainimarama said the lifting of the Public Emergency Regulation, on January 7, would lead the way ...

<timestamp>t1325492915000</timestamp>

Stuff.co.nz

Aus defector Jones crashes out of ASB

Aussie defector Sacha Jones showed some fighting qualities but crashed out of the ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland today in what may be her final appearance in her hometown event.

Aussie defector Sacha Jones showed some fighting qualities but crashed out of the ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland today in what may be her final appearance in her hometown event. As the Kiwi No 2 was despatched in three sets by Great Britain No 1 Elena Baltacha (6-2, 4-6, 6-3), it was hard not to wonder just what the Aussies would have made of their latest Kiwi acquisition. They, no doubt, would admire the fighting qualities that saw her battle back from a set down against the world No 50 in exacting blustery conditions, but would also have recognised the limitations in the Kiwi No 2's game that eventually saw her undone. Cramp in her arm that required attention in the final set also didn't help the local hope's prospects. Jones, of course, controversially announced recently she was switching tennis nationalities to Australia, where her father was born, principally to access the vast financial resources that will be at her disposal over there. The 21-year-old world No 261 clearly needs some work on her game and whether Australia's riches can provide the impetus for a rise up the rankings remains to be seen. On today's evidence she has the game to foot it with the top flight, if not yet the overall package. But the Aucklander was adamant that it was a decision she had to make in order to give herself the best chance to make the necessary improvements. "It was a really hard decision to make," she said in the tournament lead-in. "I've been thinking about it for a few years now. I can get a passport easily and the resources they can offer me there are far more than I can get here. "It's just the way it is. Tennis NZ don't get the funding because of the way Sparc are structured and at the end of the day it's about me giving myself the best opportunity I can." Now that she's turned her back on New Zealand - and hundreds of thousands of dollars in backing that has been diverted her way - she's unlikely to get back into the ASB ...

<timestamp>t1325489025000</timestamp>

Stuff.co.nz

YouTube star Kristian Anderson loses battle

Sydney man Kristian Anderson, made famous by a YouTube tribute to his Kiwi wife after he was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer, has died.

Sydney man Kristian Anderson, made famous by a YouTube tribute to his Kiwi wife after he was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer, has died. His wife Rachel confirmed Anderson died at Manly Hospital just after 8am today. "My darling husband went to meet Jesus this morning. It was peaceful and beautiful. Funeral details to come soon," she tweeted on his account. The 36-year-old from Curl Curl had been having chemotherapy since he was diagnosed with cancer in October 2009. His touching YouTube clip was made as a birthday present for his wife and as a thank you for her support. It featured an introduction by New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, because Rachel is a Kiwi. Movie star Hugh Jackman also appeared in the video after Anderson asked Triple M presenter Gus Worland for assistance. The clip had Anderson holding up placards with words of love and support for his wife against the song Marry Me, by Train. The clip has been viewed more than 300,000 times and even US talkshow queen Oprah Winfrey became a fan. Winfrey gave the couple AUD$250,000 (NZ $330,000) for medical expenses when she hosted an episode of her show at the Sydney Opera House in January last year. In his last interview, Anderson told The Daily Telegraph of his love for his wife and their sons Cody, 5, and Jakob, 3. "I'm not afraid of dying but I am afraid of leaving them behind," he said in early December. In his last entry on his blog How the light gets in, posted by his wife after his death, Anderson reflected on his battle with cancer. "The truth being we're all broken, we're all cracked and what so many people see as a fault or a malfunction really is something to be considered useful," he wrote. "I'm not sure how much longer I have left but it appears that the physical and medical signs are all pointing to my end. "Thank you for journeying with me this far. I pray you find the same peace I have."
DOC worker missing on Raoul Island

A search is under way for a Conservation Department volunteer, missing on remote Raoul Island.

A search is under way for a Conservation Department volunteer, missing on remote Raoul Island. The volunteer's vehicle and gear were found close to where he was carrying out water temperature readings at 6am today, a DOC spokeswoman said. The remaining three staff and three volunteers were searching the shore, but had found no further signs of him. An aircraft has been sent up to Raoul by the Rescue Co-ordination Centre of New Zealand to carry out an aerial search. It was due to reach the area about 7.20pm to use the remaining daylight. The department is monitoring the situation, with the safety and wellbeing of the remaining staff and volunteers being the top priority, the spokeswoman said. The Kermadecs Islands, 1000km northeast of New Zealand, are a nature reserve managed by the Department of Conservation. The chain of islands stretch some 250km along the western edge of the Kermadec Trench, with Raoul Island the biggest at 2900 hectares.
Christchurch has first 2012 baby

Christchurch has not had the smoothest start to the new year but it can claim to be the home of New Zealand's first 2012 baby.

Christchurch has not had the smoothest start to the new year but it can claim to be the home of New Zealand's first 2012 baby. Waikato Hospital staff had thought Louisa Tuaine, who was born at 12.35am yesterday, was the country's first New Year baby. But Lachlan Forster came into the world just after midnight on New Year's Day at Christchurch Women's Hospital. ''We looked up at the clock right after he came out and it said two seconds past midnight, but the midwife wrote down 12.02am,'' said dad Scott Forster. Wife Kelly was taken to hospital at 9.30pm on New Year's Eve and the birth went smoothly. However, the early-morning aftershocks yesterday disrupted her sleep before she returned home with Lachlan in the afternoon. ''It was extremely fast for me, although obviously not for Kelly,'' Scott said. ''They say the second child comes a lot faster.'' Lachlan weighed 3.6kg and is the couple's second child. They have a 3-year-old daughter, Trelise. Kelly Forster said experiencing earthquakes on the fifth floor of the hospital was a ''new experience''. ''It wasn't that scary. You're just rolling with it, not like at home where everything shakes and jumps.'' She said she could not believe Lachlan was the first baby of 2012 in the country. ''You can't get much closer than this. We just assumed he'd be well into the next day,'' she said. - © Fairfax NZ News

<timestamp>t1325478636000</timestamp>

Stuff.co.nz

One boat was being used for water skiing and the other was pulling a sea biscuit when they collided about 2.20pm today. Constable Craig Bennett of Kurow said a three-year-old boy and his 67-year-old grandfather were flown by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital, while three other victims with suspected broken bones were taken by ambulance to Timaru Hospital. The 67-year-old man was taken to hospital as a precaution due to a history of heart problems. "The two boats didn't see other until the last minute and collided, throwing people from the boats,'' he said. The boats managed to slow down before the they struck each other at a 30-degree angle. Murdoch - who joined Twitter less than 48 hours ago and already has almost 40,000 followers - quickly deleted the message, but it was preserved by some Twitter users and quickly spread around the website. "Maybe Brits have too many holidays for broke country!" Murdoch, who is holidaying on the Caribbean holiday island of Saint Barthelemy, wrote about 6am Australian time. His wife, Wendi Deng, also appears to have joined the increasingly ubiquitous microblogging site, quickly replied: "RUPERT!! delete tweet!!" Within minutes the Wendi Deng account, which has not yet been verified and may not be genuine, continued: "EVERY1 @rupertmurdoch was only having a joke pROMSIE!!!" Minutes later: "explaining to @rupertmurdoch about being careful with humor on line. sometimes it comes out as rude!" About five hours later, Murdoch revealed his Twitter profile was causing people close to him some angst. "I'm getting killed for fooling around here and friends frightened what I may really say!" he wrote. The decision of the octogenarian billionaire to embrace Twitter has been greeted with surprise by many, given his previous view of the internet as the home of "porn, thievery and hackers". Though his first attempts to use the social-media website suggest may still be getting the hang of it, with misplaced full stops and strange syntax abounding. And it appears that he has also yet to win the love and adoration from some Twitter users - "tweeps" - that he inspires within his company, with many expressing a range of emotions about his presence in tweets.
Australia welcomes end to martial law in Fiji

The Australian government has welcomed Fiji's decision to lift its draconian emergency laws but says the military regime must do a lot more to restore democracy.

The Australian government has welcomed Fiji's decision to lift its draconian emergency laws but says the military regime must do a lot more to restore democracy. Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has used a televised New Year message to announce that his interim government's Public Emergency Regulations will be lifted on January 7. Commodore Bainimarama said lifting the laws introduced in April 2009 would open the way for national consultations on a new constitution, likely to begin next month. The Australian government's Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs, Richard Marles, says the move is a definite step in the right direction. ''The Public Emergency Regulations have been an oppressive part of the interim regime in Fiji and we've been calling for their removal really since they were instituted,'' Marles told AAP on Monday. But Marles said Commodore Bainimarama - who seized power in a 2006 coup - still had a lot of work to do. ''There is a long way to go in restoring democracy to Fiji. We are keen to see how these developments play out,'' he said. Marles pointed out that Fiji's media and essential services decrees - which impose strict limits on press and union freedom - remain in place. Marles said it also remained to be seen whether Commodore Bainimarama would deliver on his pledge to hold elections in 2014. Australia's Rudd and Gillard Labor governments have maintained a tough line and sanctions against the Fijian regime, despite calls from some commentators for a softer approach. ''As to the effect of our diplomacy, we'll leave that to others to judge,'' Marles said.
Woman hurt in propeller accident

A woman was taken to hospital this morning after she was struck by a boat propeller while competing in a surf boat race on the NSW south coast.

A woman was taken to hospital this morning after she was struck by a boat propeller while competing in a surf boat race on the NSW south coast. The accident, which is believed to have left the woman’s leg sliced open, took place on the second day of the Navy George Bass Surfboat Marathon, billed as the world’s longest and toughest open ocean surf boat race. Competitors take place in a 190km race over seven days, from Batemans Bay to Eden. They take turns to compete, and when they have completed a section will jump out of their boat and wait in the water for their support boat to pick them up. Race spokesman Commander Rod Harrod said the woman, from the Gerringong team, was waiting in the open water for her support boat to pick her up about 9.30am, but was struck by the boat’s propeller as she climbed in. Crews rushed to her aid and she was given emergency first aid to stem the bleeding on her leg on the major support boat, before being transferred to Moruya Hospital. “We’re expecting she’ll need a good many stiches, but she was conscious throughout, although obviously in shock.’’ The Canberra Moruya Vikings led the men’s teams today for the second day running, while Torquay led the women’s teams.
Prince Philip walks to church after operation

Prince Philip attended a new year's day church service on Sunday, walking the short distance to the building in his first public appearance after a Christmas health scare.

Prince Philip attended a new year's day church service on Sunday, walking the short distance to the building in his first public appearance after a Christmas health scare. Philip, Britain's longest-serving consort, spent four nights in hospital - missing the royal family's Christmas celebrations - after suffering chest pains on December 23. He had an operation to ease a blocked heart artery - a minor procedure which does not require a general anaesthetic - and left the Papworth hospital near Cambridge on Tuesday. Television footage from the royal Sandringham estate showed Philip smiling and walking comfortably to and from the St Mary Magdalene church on a mild winter morning, flanked by a small crowd of well-wishers. Commentators have suggested that Philip, who has been in robust health in recent years, may have to scale back his official duties following the health scare. The Queen, who married Philip in 1947, faces a hectic year in 2012 as she celebrates her 60th year on the throne. She is scheduled to make an extensive tour of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. - Reuters

<timestamp>t1325471337000</timestamp>

Stuff.co.nz

Apple's first iPhone was made in 1983

This post was originally published on Mashable

This post was originally published on Mashable The first iPhone was actually dreamed up in 1983. Forget that silly old touch screen, this iPhone was a landline with full, all-white handset and a built-in screen controlled with a stylus. The phone was designed for Apple by Hartmut Esslinger, an influential designer who helped make the Apple IIc computer (Apple's first "portable" computer) and later founded Frogdesign. The 1983 iPhone certainly fits in with Esslinger's other designs for Apple. It also foreshadows the touchscreens of both the iPhone and iPad. Images of the 1983 iPhone have been circling the web for a while but there has been renewed interest in Apple's early designs and history thanks to a peak inside Stanford University's massive trove of Apple documents. The archives are a close-guarded secret, but Stanford is starting to grant access to select journalists and organisations. The archives were donated in 1997, after Steve Jobs rejoined the company and document much of the design and personnel changes that took place in the 1980s. The 1983 iPhone is just one of many prototypes buried in Apple's past. There's even a device that looks eerily similar to an iPad. Despite the phone's age, it actually looks like a cool concept that could easily be updated into a modern consumer product by replacing simple stylus screen with an iPad-like interface.
$1 million drug bust near Goulburn

Goulburn Police believe they’ve made another major dent in the local drug industry with the discovery of an estimated $1 million worth of cannabis.

GOULBURN Police believe they’ve made another major dent in the local drug industry with the discovery of an estimated $1 million worth of cannabis. Numerous officers swooped on a property, 15km north of Bigga at 2pm Friday, armed with a search warrant, Sergeant Rob Post said. They allegedly discovered 541 cannabis plants, with an approximate street value of $1,082,000. A 60-year-old Bigga district man was charged with cultivating a commercial quantity of cannabis and firearm offences. Police will allege they also found a semiautomatic rifle. He was refused bail by police on Friday and again by Goulburn Local Court during a bail hearing on Saturday. The man will face Parramatta Local Court again on January 3. Sgt Post said the plants were in three plots on a secluded section of the 240-hectare property. Police claimed an efficient irrigation system, rigged with pipes and pumps was in use, and the plants were surrounded by web netting and shade cloth for protection. An agronomist examined the plants and the Rural Fire Service was called in to burn them that afternoon. Sgt Post said the discovery would disrupt the cannabis supply as the plants were reaching a mature stage. “The Goulburn Local Area Command and Goulburn Drug Unit are still chasing information on drug supply (generally) and we encourage the public to be forthcoming, he said. The Bigga discovery follows multiple local drug charges laid in December as part of Operation Oppy.

<timestamp>t1325467760000</timestamp>
The Canberra Times
