It was published by its owner, Jin Jiang International Group, on Dec 28. The book about the time-honored luxury hotel, from its original incarnation as Sassoon House, is elaborately illustrated and has beautiful photos. Peace Impression is more than a casual salute to "old Shanghai" nostalgia. It is a serious endeavor to portray the hotel's history and show that it is an integral part of the city's modernization. 021-6321-6888

China Daily

Hyatt has sublime positioning Updated: 2011-12-31 11:17 By Yang Yijun (China Daily)

Perched on the 88-story Jinmao Tower, Grand Hyatt Shanghai is one of the world's highest hotels. Provided to China Daily GM Foued el Mabrouk is confident about landmark property's future at the center of Shanghai, the nation's financial hub. Yang Yijun reports. Sitting in the Cloud 9 Bar on the 85th floor of the Grand Hyatt Shanghai, the hotel's general manager Foued el Mabrouk recently recalled what he has experienced over the past 28 years in China - and told the story in fluent Mandarin. He said the word "change" does not describe what happened in China. "It's a complete transformation," he noted. El Mabrouk came to China from Tunisia at the age of 20 during the time of the planned economy. As the country transformed, so did El Mabrouk's life. He graduated from Tsinghua University, met his wife, started his career and his children were born in China. He has also experienced milestones in China's development, including the start of the opening-up policy and the country's participation in the WTO, Olympics and World Expo. After being the general manager of the Grand Hyatt Beijing, he was appointed to his current position in August. "I spent 28 years being a Beijinger. And now I'm looking forward to spending my next 28 years learning to be a Shanghainese," he said, adding that he is very interested in cycling around the alleys of Shanghai, like he did in Beijing's hutong. El Mabrouk says he and his team are very proud of the Grand Hyatt Shanghai located in the 88-story Jinmao Tower, in the center of the Lujiazui area of Pudong. "The hotel and building symbolize China's development. Whenever there is a photo of Shanghai, the Jinmao Tower is there," he said. "We are part of China's development. We are part of Shanghai, the commercial center of China. We continue to be positioned as the leading hotel not only in Shanghai but also in China," he said. After working in the hospitality industry in China for ...

China Daily

Wines that match the beauty of their locations Updated: 2011-12-31 10:32 (China Daily)

Rippon vineyard on the edge of Lake Wanaka on New Zealand's south island must be one of the most photographed wineries in the world. The wines match the beauty of the location. The late Rolfe Mills returned to his family farm in Wanaka in 1974 and planted rows of experimental vines near the house. Despite being mocked by locals, Mills and his family persisted, planting the first commercial vineyard block in 1982 and focusing on pinot noir, riesling, gewurztraminer and sauvignon blanc. Rolfe believed these varieties most suited the site. His son Nick, who describes himself as an artisan winemaker, returned home in 2002 after four years in Burgundy. A superb range of pinot noirs is the product of extensive training in Burgundy. The property has been in the Mills family for four generations and is dedicated to biodynamic farming. Wines are made in an old lambing barn. The estate is named after Emma Rippon, an ancestor of Rolfe Mills. Rippon's vines are among the oldest in the region. Most were planted between 1985 and 1991, and 80 percent of the 15-hectare vineyard is planted on its own roots and receives no irrigation. Frost remains a constant danger in Central Otago but Lake Wanaka acts like "a big hot water bottle", Mills said. The core temperature of the lake only changes two or three degrees from summer to winter. I've been lucky enough to taste a range of vintages, on site and elsewhere, and believe Rippon wines are unique. They truly reflect the vineyard's terroir. Rippon's schist based soils produce, as the texture of the rock suggests, wines that are layered and complex. To quote Nick Mills, the wines have lift rather than weight, precision rather than opulence, and finesse rather than fullness. The Rippon 2008 pinot noire has layers of red fruit and aromas of rhubarb and rose, plus a remarkable balance of sweet fruit and racy acidity. It retails for $41 in Hong Kong and is a bargain when compared with premier cru burgundies. The 2009 Rippon riesling has long length and ...

China Daily

THE WEEK Dec 31: We messed up By THE WEEK ( chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2011-12-31 10:48

Visit THE WEEK on Sina weibo Visit THE WEEK on Tencent weibo We start with a story which may have affected more parts of the world than any other story this year. The Occupy protests began in New York City this year as thousands gathered to demonstrate against a laundry list of unjust policies and behaviors. As time went on, the protests moved to thousands of cities around the world, but their motivations for protesting became just as diverse as the cities in which the demonstrations were held. Working on weibo One of the biggest stories coming out of China this year was the explosion of weibo, China’s twitter-like micro-blogging service. A growing number of people are using the site everyday. Aside from following celebrities and sharing social news, people are turning to weibo as a news source. That may not be the smartest idea, considering false stories of prominent authors dying and banks handing out money for old coins got huge publicity. Then there’s the story of Guo Mei Mei. Celebrity gossip 2011 Western celebrities may have gained popularity on China’s weibo sites this year, but many more have made headlines for reasons other than their on-screen performances. For this week’s round-up, we bring you all of the best celebrity gossip from 2011.
Straight to the source Updated: 2011-12-31 10:02 By Ye Jun (China Daily)

Visitors taste wine and olive oil at Vinitaly, the biggest wine expo in Italy. Photos by Ye Jun / China Daily A tour of Italy's olive oil producers illustrated the adage that a clean and natural environment produces the best quality olive oil. Ye Jun reports. In China, people say "good mountains and good water produce great tea". The same can be said about olive oil in Italy. A clean environment helps the country produce quality olive oil, as I found on a recent tour. The tour organizers were Veronafiere and the Consortium of Guarantee of Quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVQ) in Italy. Veronafiere holds the annual Vinitaly in Verona. The tour included a visit to Vinitaly, as well as to olive farms and factories in Brindisi, Andria and Spoleto. The first stop was Verona, known as the home of Romeo and Juliet, to attend Vinitaly, the biggest wine expo in Italy, and which has two other sections - International Exhibition of Quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil (SOL) and Agrifood. It is difficult to grasp the size and impact of the wine and olive oil industry, if one does not go there and become one of Vinitaly's 153,000 visitors. Our group of Chinese journalists expected to taste olive oil, but soon found we were also there to taste wine, as many Italian businesses produce both. An olive oil tasting at SOL in Verona helped us to expand our vocabulary of descriptors. The smell and taste of fresh oil can be described by words such as "cut grass, fresh grass, tomato, almond, nuts" and even "banana". Tasting olive oil is both similar to and different from tasting wine. Both require shaking of the cup and sniffing. When one sips olive oil, one needs to draw air inside with a "hhss" sound to spread it all over the tongue. Then the taster needs to chew it, and exhale air from the mouth, out of the nose, to fully experience the smell of the oil. A colored glass is used for olive oil tasting, to prevent color from influencing judgment. While the nose senses different fragrances ...

China Daily
