Afghan girl, tortured after refusing prostitution, to get treatment in India

15-year-old girl Sahar Gul has been severely tortured for months by her in-laws.

An Afghan official says a 15-year-old girl severely tortured for months by her in-laws who wanted to force her into prostitution will be sent to India for medical treatment. Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said today that Sahar Gul's mother-in-law and sister-in-law were arrested and her husband was being sought. The case has shocked Afghanistan. President Hamid Karzai has said that whoever used violence against Gul will be punished. According to officials in northeastern Baghlan province, the in-laws kept Gul in a basement for six months, ripped her fingernails out, tortured her with hot irons, and broke her fingers. Police freed her last week.
Lokpal: CPI(M) accuses Trinamool of being a part of RS 'orchestration'

CPI(M) chief says TMC should have opposed the bill in Union Cabinet, Lok Sabha.

The CPI(M), which has accused the UPA government of “subterfuge and sabotage” in not allowing voting on Lokpal Bill in Rajya Sabha, on Monday said Trinamool Congress was part of the “orchestration” that helped the government. “They (Trinamool) have been running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. They should have opposed it in the Union Cabinet of which they are a part. They should have opposed it in Lok Sabha. Not having done that, they connived with others to ensure that the Bill is sabotaged,” senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said. So what happened in the Rajya Sabha, where the crucial legislation could not be passed and the House adjourned on the midnight of January 29-30, “was to help the government not to pass the Bill,” Yechury said, adding that “chaos” was created in an “orchestrated” manner to stall its passage. “The UPA government is squarely responsible for this and Trinamool was part of this orchestration. It is most unfortunate that this sort of subterfuge and sabotage has been carried out when the people are looking up to Parliament for an effective anti-graft bill,” he said. Asked about Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee rapping her party's MPs in Lok Sabha, Yechury asked, “Why didn't she scold them first when the Cabinet met on the issue? She has a minister in the Cabinet. ... They seemed to have suddenly remembered all these issues in Rajya Sabha.”

Indian Express

Poor sleep worsens sugar control in young diabetics

Lighter sleep and breathing problems lead to trouble controlling blood sugar.

A good night's sleep is essential for young diabetics in more ways than one. Without it, they can have worse control of their blood sugar, perform poorly in school and behave badly, according to a new study. According to Michelle Perfect and her colleagues, lighter sleep and breathing problems lead to trouble controlling blood sugar, despite adherence to diabetic health guidelines “Despite adhering to recommendations for good diabetic health, many youth with Type 1 diabetes have difficulty maintaining control of their blood sugars”, Perfect, principal investigator of the study, said. The researchers tracked the sleep health of 50 Type 1 diabetics, aged 10 to 16, and compared that data with a similar control group. They found that the yighter sleep and breathing problems lead to trouble controlling blood sugar, which was related to compromised school performance and higher blood sugar levels. “Sleep problems were associated with lower grades, poorer performance on state standardized tests, poor quality of life and abnormalities in daytime behaviour,” Perfect said. “On the upside, sleep is a potentially modifiable health behaviour, so these kids could be helped by a qualified professional to get a better night's sleep,” she added. The study will be published in the January issue of the journal Sleep.

Indian Express

Mullah Omar pressurises TTP to stop targeting Pak army

Omar advises terror group to focus attention on US-led troops in Afghanistan instead.

Taliban's supreme commander Mullah Mohammad Omar, now in hiding, has put pressure on his groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan to form a new grouping which has pledged to stop targeting Pakistani security forces and instead focus attention on US-led troops in Afghanistan. Following the intervention of one-eyed Omar, the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban formed a joint five-member 'shura' or council with other Pakistani militant groups yesterday to oversee an end to attacks on Pakistani forces, The News daily quoted its sources in the Taliban as saying. Mullah Omar has not surfaced since the flight of the Taliban from Kabul in 2001 and according to reports is sheltering in and around Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's restive southwestern Balochistan province. The new 'shura' includes the Haqqani network and powerful commanders of the groups led by Maulvi Nazeer and Hafiz Gul Bahadur who have already signed a peace deal with the Pakistan army. The new entrants into the shura are the factions of Pakistani Taliban led by Hakimullah Mehsud and Maulana Waliur Rahman from South Waziristan. The moves to unite factions of Afghan and Pakistani Taliban comes in the wake of pressure by the US government on Islamabad to take military action against these groups believed to be a massed in North Waziristan. The five-member 'shura' with other Pakistani militant groups made a pledge to "stop their fight against their own armed forces and instead focus their attention against the US-led forces in Afghanistan", The News said.
Budget to be presented after state polls: Pranab

EC has scheduled Assembly elections in 5 states from Jan 30 to Mar 3 and counting from Mar 4.

The Union Budget will be presented after the completion of elections in five states, but the government has not yet decided the final date of presentation, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Monday. “We have not yet decided the time (for the Budget), but naturally it will be after the elections,” Mukherjee said. He was replying to a query on the likely date for presentation of the Budget. The announcement of the Assembly election schedule in five states between January 30 and March 3 has raised the possibility of rescheduling of the Budget for 2012-13 this year. As per the schedule worked out by the Election Commission, last polling will take place on March 3 in Goa and counting of votes will begin on March 4. The general budget is usually presented on the last day of February every year. Mukherjee will hold brainstorming sessions with various stakeholders during his annual pre-budget meetings beginning January 11. The first meeting would be held with agriculturalists, followed by a series of interactions with sectoral experts, representatives, industry captains and economists over the next 10 days to get their feedback and inputs for incorporating them in Budget 2012-13. Mukherjee is slated to meet captains of industry on January 13, followed by trade union leaders on January 16. Five states -- Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Manipur -- are going to polls between January 30 and March 3. Punjab and Uttarakhand, whose Assemblies will be completing terms on March 14 and 12 respectively, go to polls on January 30 while Manipur polls are slated on January 28.
Dalits should not fall prey to Cong tactics: Thackeray

Shiv Sena chief reacts to Centre's decision to hand-over land for a Ambedkar memorial.

Reacting to the Centre's decision to give an in-principle mod to hand-over of Indu mill land here for a memorial of Dr B R Ambedkar, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray today said Dalits should not fall prey to the Congress's "tactics". "The Congress-led government has resorted to this strategy of giving the Indu mill land for construction of Ambedkar's memorial to win Dalits votes in the municipal corporation elections," Thackeray said in a statement in the party mouthpiece 'Samanna'. Municipal polls in Mumbai, where Sena-BJP alliance is in power, are scheduled next month. Advising Dalits to be cautious, Thackeray said they should trounce Congress and bring the (recently formed) Shiv Shakti-Bhim Shakti (Sena-BJP-RPI combine) to power in the elections. "Dalits should not fall prey to the assurances from the Congress," he said. He pointed out that there was an air of uncertainty about the word 'in-principle'. Following an agitation by Dalit outfits, the Centre, on Saturday, agreed in principle to give 12.5 acres of Indu Mills land in Mumbai's Dadar area to the Maharashtra government for Ambedkar memorial. An assurance to this effect was given by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to an all-party delegation from Maharashtra, led by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.

Indian Express

A quarter of UK's population 'obese'

It's official. A quarter of Britain's population are obese, new figures have revealed.

It's official. A quarter of Britain's population are obese, new figures have revealed. Despite a quarter being obese on the Body Mass Index (BMI) scale, a high number "deny" how severely their weight could be affecting their health. Only six per cent believe their problem is severe enough to be described as obese. In fact, three quarters of people with an obese BMI underestimate their weight category according to the National Slimming Survey of 2,065 people. BMI is a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) if their BMI is between 25 and 30 kg/m2, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2. More than one in three respondents who are regarded as overweight said they felt weight was "the most important issue in life". Half of those classified as obese said their weight made them feel embarrassed, while others felt awkward or trapped. Dr Jacquie Lavin, of Slimming World, was quoted by 'The Sun' as saying, "This worrying data reveals the complex psychological issues associated with being overweight.
Police arrest 68 Occupy protesters in NYC on New Year's

Protesters tear down barricades in Zuccotti Park, inviting police ire; many face pepper-spray, arrests.

Dozens of Occupy Wall Street protesters were arrested on New Year's Eve as they tore down barricades surrounding New York City's Zuccotti Park, the former home of their encampment that was dismantled several weeks ago. About 500 protesters gathered in the park Saturday evening, where they rang in the new year with songs and their now-familiar chant of “We are the 99 percent.” About 11 pm, after a relatively quiet evening, some protesters began to tear down the barricades that have surrounded the park since New York police officers evicted Occupy Wall Street members on Nov. 15, protesters said Sunday. Police then moved in. “They (police) got very aggressive and started pushing people and pepper-spraying people”, protester Jason Amadi, 27, of San Jose, California, said Sunday. “I got pepper-sprayed in the face.” The protesters said they worked at sections of the park in teams of twos and threes, retreating only when police converged and pulled the barricades back. “People were collecting all the barricades and making kind of a big heap of them in the middle of the park”, said protester Melanie Butler, 30, of Brooklyn. “And we were standing on it with our Occupy Wall Street banner.” The New York Police Department said 68 people were arrested, and at least one person was accused of assaulting a police officer, who suffered cuts on one hand. Other charges included trespassing, disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment. Police were still processing the arrests Sunday morning, but some protesters had been released. Police provided no other details on the confrontation. After the arrests, the crowd began to thin out. The complainant Madhuswamy in his complaint has accused Kumaraswamy of denotifying 3.8 acres in Thanisandra village, which had been acquired for formation of a residential layout by Bangalore Development Authority in the Arkavathy layout in violation of rules. Former minister C Chennigappa also has been named in the private complaint, alleging his involvement in getting the land denotified. The petitioner alleged that Kumaraswamy ordered denotification of the land during October 2007, a few days before the JDS-BJP coalition government collapsed following withdrawal of support by BJP.
Illegal mining case: AP High Court cancels IAS officer's bail

Srilakshmi has abused official position to grant favours to ex-minister G Janardhan Reddy-owned OMC.

Andhra Pradesh High Court cancelled the bail of senior IAS officer Y Srilakshmi, one of the accused in Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) case. The special CBI court had granted a conditional bail to Srilakshmi, arrested on a charge of abusing the official position to grant favours to former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy-owned OMC, on December 2.
